How Fairmint Protects Your Equity
This article is for investors, shareholders, and anyone who holds equity through Fairmint.
You are handing Fairmint your identity documents and the paperwork behind your equity. This page explains what happens to all of it, who can see it, and why nothing about your holdings changes without you.
Who can see what you hold
You can see your positions. For positions recorded on a company's Fairmint cap table, that company can also see them. Positions you import as a personal record are visible only to you — they do not appear on anyone else's cap table.
Other investors in the same company cannot see your position, your name against it, or what you paid. Neither can anyone else with a Fairmint account.
If you hold equity through an entity, that entity's positions are separate from your personal ones, and switching between them changes what is on screen. See Invest through a company, fund, or trust.
Nothing is saved until you approve it
When you upload documents to add equity you already own, the terms read out of each file are shown to you first. You check them, correct anything wrong, and approve what you want to keep. Nothing joins your portfolio before that.
The same principle runs through the rest of the app. An investment is not signed until you sign it. A change to your legal details is not sent anywhere until you confirm it.
Nothing reaches a cap table silently
When you change the legal details recorded against your equity, the change does not overwrite anything. It arrives at each company holding your position as a pending update, and each one approves it independently.
That cuts both ways, and it is the point: you cannot be edited out of a cap table without knowing, and a company's official record cannot be rewritten from outside it.
The history of every change is kept, so the record still shows the details that applied at the time of each investment. See Your profile and your details.
You can only import equity that is yours
When you upload a document to add a holding, Fairmint checks that the document names you.
If it names someone else, the import is refused and the app explains why. If it names a company you already hold equity through, you can move the position onto that entity rather than onto yourself. This stops a document from quietly adding a position to the wrong account.
Documents are scanned
Every file you upload is checked for malware before it is read or made available to download. That applies to files other people send you through the platform as well.
Verification travels with you
Your identity is verified once, at the Fairmint level, and reused across every company you hold equity in.
This means you are not sending your passport to a different founder every time someone invites you into a round, and no individual company ends up holding a copy of your identity documents in order to let you invest.
Verification is required before you can add holdings or take action on your equity. See Create your account and get verified.
Common questions
Question | Answer |
Can other investors in a company see my investment? | No. Only you and the company that issued it. |
Does Fairmint sell my data? | No. Fairmint does not sell your personal data. Operational service providers (identity verification, payment processing) receive only the data needed to perform their function. See the Privacy Policy for full details. |
What happens to my identity documents? | They are used for verification and are not passed to the companies you invest in. |
Can a company remove me from its cap table? | A company maintains its own record, but changes are recorded and visible to you, not made silently. |
If Fairmint disappeared, would I lose my equity? | No. Your equity is established by the legal agreements you signed, which you can download from Documents at any time. Fairmint is the record, not the ownership. |
