Add Equity You Already Own

This article is for investors, shareholders, and anyone who holds equity through Fairmint.

Most shareholders hold equity in companies that are not on Fairmint. Rather than typing each position in by hand, you upload the paperwork and Fairmint reads the terms off the document.

You stay in control the whole way through. Nothing joins your portfolio until you have seen what was read out of each file and approved it.

What you can upload

Signed equity paperwork, as PDFs. That includes:

  • SAFEs and convertible notes

  • Stock purchase agreements

  • Option grant agreements, for both ISOs and NSOs

  • Restricted stock and RSU paperwork

  • Warrants

You can mix them in a single upload. There is no need to sort investments from grants first, or to run two separate uploads, because each file is classified as it is read.

> You need to be verified to add holdings. If your verification is still processing, see Create your account and get verified.

How it works

Step 1: Upload your documents

Open the upload screen from the navigation, or from the empty state on Investments or Equity Grants, and drop your files in.

Step 2: Wait while the documents are read

Each file is scanned for malware, then read. You will see an analysing state per file. Larger documents take longer, and you can leave the page and come back.

Step 3: Review what was found

Each document opens a review panel showing what was pulled out of it: the company, the instrument type, the amount or the number of shares, the date, and any other terms the document carried.

Check each one against the paperwork. You can correct anything that was read wrongly, including the type of instrument if a document was misclassified.

Step 4: Approve what you want to keep

Approve the positions you want and skip the ones you do not. Approved positions are saved and the source PDFs appear under Documents.

Investments land on your Investments page. Grants land on Equity Grants. Both stay linked to the file they came from, so you can always get back to the original.

Checks that protect you

A few things are refused on purpose:

  • Documents that do not name you. If the paperwork names someone else, the import is refused and the app explains why. If it names a company you already hold equity through, you can move the position onto that entity instead.

  • Positions you have already added. If a document covers a holding that is already in your portfolio, the app flags it rather than creating a duplicate.

  • Files that fail the malware scan. Uploads are checked before they are read or made available to download.

If an upload fails outright, the app offers to email support with the details attached, so you do not have to describe the problem yourself.

Common questions

Question

Answer

Does uploading a document change the company's cap table?

No. Positions you add are your own record of what you hold. They do not write to anyone's cap table.

The extraction got a number wrong. What do I do?

Correct it in the review step before approving. Nothing is saved until you approve.

Can I upload a photo of a document instead of a PDF?

Upload PDFs. Photos and screenshots are not read reliably.

Can I add a position for my fund rather than for me?

Yes, if the document names the fund and you hold equity through it. See Invest through a company, fund, or trust.

Can I upload an equity grant against my company?

No. Grants are always held by a person, so upload those while acting as yourself.
